Anyone can suffer from urinary incontinence, and there are many causes. However, many people suffer in silence due to embarrassment.
The team at Skin Retouch MediSpa is proud to offer EMSELLA, a treatment to improve muscle strength and reduce the likelihood of urinary incontinence, including the minor accidents that happen when individuals sneeze, laugh, or exercise.
Read on to find out if EMSELLA can help you.
What causes urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is typically caused by the muscles and nerves that help the bladder hold or pass urine becoming weakened. This can happen as we age or after childbirth. Either the muscles stretch out, or the brain is no longer sending the right signals to the muscles telling them to hold urine inside the bladder until we’re ready to use the bathroom.
This can happen to anyone, and while people assume it’s a normal part of aging, it’s not something you have to live with, thanks to new medical interventions, such as EMSELLA.
How does EMSELLA help with incontinence?
The EMSELLA chair is a device that delivers thousands of supramaximal muscle contractions to the pelvic floor at each session. EMSELLA treatment aims to strengthen the pelvic floor so it can hold urine until we’re ready to release it.
EMSELLA is a noninvasive treatment that uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate pelvic floor contractions to “reeducate” the muscles. Patients don’t even need to get undressed for the procedure. They simply sit comfortably on the EMSELLA chair.
Does EMSELLA treatment hurt?
The treatment is not reported to be painful, and patients can often read a book, carry on a conversation, or watch TV during their session.
Treatments take 28 minutes on the device, and patients only need to dress comfortably in light fabrics and remove all metal before treatment. Electronic devices are not permitted during treatment because electromagnetic energy could damage the machine.
How many EMSELLA treatments are needed?
EMSELLA strengthens the muscles of your pelvic floor. But like most good things, this doesn’t happen overnight. It may take 9 – 12 months to see the treatment’s full effects, and many patients come in for multiple appointments to see optimal results.
It’s common to schedule sessions twice a week for a total of six sessions (though some people need more or fewer). Results will depend on your level of urinary incontinence. Still, the most effective treatments involve patients in the preliminary stages of incontinence, so it’s important not to wait until things get unbearable to start your treatment.
Some patients may experience increased incontinence symptoms after the first treatment, but this is temporary. A stronger pelvic floor may eventually lead to better sexual health in both men and women.
